Student Suspected in Murder May Return to School, Sparking Parent Outrage

A teenager suspected of involvement in the murder of Yemenu Zalka, 21, in April is expected to return to classes and enter the 10th grade at a high school in Petah Tikva on Tuesday, a move that has ignited significant controversy and an immediate threat of a school strike from parents of other students in the grade.

Parents have firmly stated they will not allow their children to be put at risk and will not commence the school year without a clear, official decision from the authorities. "We will not open the school year at this school as long as we do not receive an official decision," stated attorney Aner Daskal, who is leading the protest alongside Yemenu's sister, Yeros Zalka, in an interview with 'Ha'olam Boker'. The parents learned of the planned integration through a WhatsApp group message, which caused shock within the community.

"There is a value and moral issue here that is heartbreaking. To think that a person like Yemenu Zalka lies in the ground while those involved in his murder are integrated into an educational framework," Daskal described the difficult feelings and concerns for the safety of students and staff. "It's incomprehensible how Israeli law works," added Zalka. "The part about releasing them is deeply rooted in the legal system, which doesn't say that just because they are minors, we must first rehabilitate them."

Amidst a rise in violence across the country, the deceased's sister claimed, "Every parent should ask their principal or their municipality if some of the accused are going to return to the same high school."

The Ministry of Education responded by stating, "After it was determined by the authorized bodies that the student must be returned to the education system, the Ministry is obligated, according to the law, to ensure an educational framework for every student. The placement will be accompanied by professional support and coordination with the local authority. For reasons of privacy and confidentiality concerning minors, we cannot comment further."

However, the school administration later clarified, "Those involved in the murder of Yemenu Zalka will not return to study at the school. The matter is being handled with the Ministry of Education and the relevant professional bodies, with the aim of resolving the issue responsibly and fully."
