Smotrich Criticizes Ofer Winter's Political Ambitions

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has publicly criticized Ofer Winter, chairman of the "Am Ich Israel" party, questioning Winter's claim to represent the public's desires and his political aspirations. Speaking at a conference hosted by ynet and Yediot Ahronot in collaboration with the Israel Democracy Institute, Smotrich stated that Winter's assertion of offering something new was questionable, especially given Winter's absence from politics on October 7th.

Smotrich argued that Winter's political standing, characterized by struggling to cross the electoral threshold and often polling below it, does not grant him the authority to speak for the Israeli public. "If he had 10 mandates in the polls, then I wouldn't argue," Smotrich remarked, adding, "Speaking in the name of the public when you are floundering around the electoral threshold and in most polls below... I don't want to speak in the name of the people of Israel."

While acknowledging the value of new political players entering the arena, Smotrich emphasized that politics is a profession requiring specific skills. He highlighted the need for politicians to possess the ability to legislate, govern, and advance processes, implying Winter lacked these qualifications. Smotrich suggested that the public desires a different direction, contrasting it with Winter's perceived political position.
