Palestinian Authority Interferes in Israeli Elections, Expert Warns
Professor Kobi Michael, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, has warned that the Palestinian Authority (PA) is actively attempting to influence Israeli elections. Michael stated that PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is working to unite Arab parties in Israel, a move he described as part of a broader, long-standing PA strategy to interfere in Israeli elections with the goal of toppling governments.
Michael explained that this interference is not new, dating back to the Yasser Arafat era. The PA maintains direct connections with leaders of Arab parties in Israel, the Arab Israeli population, and segments of the Arab Israeli elite. These channels, which remain open and active, are used to exert influence, though Michael is uncertain if the current level of influence matches that of Arafat's time.
Beyond direct PA involvement, Michael pointed to other avenues of influence, including former Knesset member Azmi Bishara, who now advises the Emir of Qatar and influences the Balad party. Turkish influence on parts of the Arab population and political leadership in Israel was also noted. However, Michael emphasized that the PA is the most accessible and direct actor.
Regarding potential Israeli responses, Michael suggested that public confrontation would be counterproductive, potentially amplifying the PA's influence. He believes Israel has channels to communicate messages to the PA and should do so assertively if the involvement poses a security risk. He differentiated between political influence, which he deemed less significant and not requiring intervention, and potential security threats.
Michael also broadened his critique to include other state actors, such as the United States, which have historically intervened in Israeli elections through various means. He argued that any foreign state entity's intervention in Israeli elections is unacceptable and should be prevented.
Finally, Michael addressed the possibility of the PA preferring a right-wing government, a notion previously suggested by Mansour Abbas. Michael believes this was only a potential consideration during Netanyahu's first term. Currently, the PA leadership views Netanyahu as an obstacle and does not see potential for breakthroughs with his government, instead favoring internationalizing the conflict to achieve statehood without concessions.
