Natural Contamination Threatens Israel's Desalination Plants
Professor Ido Bar-Zeev, a water desalination expert from Ben-Gurion University's Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research, has explained the recent disruptions affecting Israel's desalination facilities. He highlighted the critical importance of these plants, noting that 70% of the water supplied to Israeli homes originates from the Mediterranean Sea and passes through them.
The current issue involves an unidentified natural contaminant, likely organic matter such as microalgae, which is being drawn into the facilities and causing blockages. Bar-Zeev described the contamination as surprising to experts, who are actively investigating its composition and seeking a solution. Initial assessments suggest the widespread pollution originates from the south, potentially from the Gaza Strip and Egypt, and is affecting a significant portion of Israel's coastline.
Despite the challenges, Bar-Zeev expressed confidence that a solution will be found soon, stating that Israel's desalination plants are "a masterpiece of Israeli creation." However, he cautioned that this event serves as a "red flag," drawing parallels to a potential large oil spill that could severely impact operations. He recalled a relatively minor oil spill four years prior, emphasizing that a larger incident could have much more significant consequences for the country's water supply.
Bar-Zeev also noted that Israel is a global leader in water desalination technology. When asked about seeking international assistance, he explained that other countries often consult Israel on similar issues, rather than the reverse. "We are trying to brainstorm together and separately with the desalination plants," he said, adding that while he is not worried about a permanent solution, the scale and nature of the event are unusual, with no comparable widespread contamination observed in his twenty years in the field.
