Shaare Zedek Medical Center Introduces Robotic System for Kidney Stone Surgeries

Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem has become the first in Israel to implement the ILY robotic system for kidney and urinary tract stone removal surgeries. This advanced system allows for precise and stable navigation of an ureteroscope within the kidney, eliminating the need for surgical incisions.

The ILY system is operated via an interactive wireless remote, granting the surgeon enhanced control and stability during laser treatments. The surgeon can comfortably work while seated in an ergonomic position, potentially reducing physical strain during long procedures and minimizing radiation exposure from fluoroscopy.

This technology is designed for endoscopic procedures through natural urinary passages, known as RIRS, avoiding external cuts. Shaare Zedek notes that the system integrates quickly into the operating room without significant disruption to standard workflows. Initial studies suggest high efficacy and safety in treating kidney stones, with promising success rates, though further research is ongoing.

Dr. Ilan Kofka, director of the Endourology Unit, is leading the implementation at Shaare Zedek and has already performed several surgeries using the robot. He stated that the robot acts as a powerful and intuitive tool for surgeons, offering unprecedented levels of control, stability, and ergonomics, rather than replacing the surgeon. Professor Boris Tzertin, head of the Urology Department, added that the introduction of the ILY system signifies the center's commitment to medical innovation in urology and the adoption of new surgical technologies.
