Shaare Zedek Hospital Pioneers Robotic Kidney Stone Removal in Israel

Shaare Zedek Medical Center in Jerusalem has introduced the ILY system, marking the first time in Israel that a robotic system controlled by a wireless remote is being used for kidney and urinary tract stone removal. The system enables surgeons to remotely control an ureteroscope during procedures that utilize laser technology to break down stones.

The surgeon operates the ILY system from a control station, navigating the flexible ureteroscope with an interactive wireless remote. This allows for precise and stable robotic control as the scope moves through the urinary system, reducing the physical strain on the surgeon during lengthy operations. Instead of holding the instrument for extended periods, the surgeon can sit and maneuver the scope from a distance.

Shaare Zedek highlights that this new method improves surgeon ergonomics and reduces physical burden without compromising control over the ureteroscope's movements. The system facilitates delicate and stable navigation within the kidney, particularly during laser lithotripsy. An additional benefit is the reduction of the surgeon's radiation exposure, as the remote control allows them to move away from the radiation source during fluoroscopic imaging.

The ILY system, developed by French technology company STERLAB in collaboration with research institutions, is designed for endoscopic procedures through natural urinary passages, avoiding surgical incisions. Dr. Ilan Kafka, head of the Uro-Endology Unit at Shaare Zedek, led the initial surgeries using the system. He stated that the robot is a powerful and intuitive tool that enhances control, stability, and ergonomics for the surgeon, rather than replacing them.

Professor Boris Certin, head of the Urology Department at Shaare Zedek, noted that the introduction of the ILY system is part of the hospital's broader adoption of advanced urological technologies. He mentioned that the hospital recently implemented an AI-based system for enlarged prostate treatment. Professor Certin emphasized that integrating the ILY system reinforces Shaare Zedek's commitment to medical innovation and leadership in urology, aiming to bring new technologies to operating rooms for advanced and safe patient care.
