Santur Player Ofir Cohen Releases New 'Elul' Project

Santur and oud player Ofir Cohen has launched a new musical project titled 'Elul,' coinciding with the Jewish month of repentance and introspection. The project features an instrumental version of the well-known piyyut (liturgical poem) 'Ochila La'El,' aiming to highlight the unique sounds of the santur and oud and connect listeners to Jewish traditions.

Cohen's musical journey began unexpectedly during a military tour when the sound of the santur captivated him. Despite no prior formal musical training, he delved into the world of maqamat (musical modes) and discovered how deeply rooted this music was in his upbringing through synagogue melodies and piyyutim. After 15 years of performing and creating music, Cohen felt it was time to bring his personal voice and the distinctive instruments to the forefront.

The 'Elul' project seeks to bridge ancient tradition with contemporary musical expression. Cohen chose instrumental renditions to allow the melodies and instruments to speak for themselves, encouraging a deeper connection during this significant period. The musical arrangement and production were handled by Avichai Shtrit, who created a rich soundscape that showcases the santur and oud.

The single 'Ochila La'El' follows the recent release of 'Ben Adam' and is part of an upcoming EP also called 'Elul.' The project's core message emphasizes reconnecting with one's roots and heritage through a fresh musical interpretation of traditional piyyutim and maqamat, aiming to resonate with a younger generation while maintaining authenticity.
