Israeli basketball star Deni Avdija has responded to public criticism regarding his absence from the national team's recent FIBA World Cup qualifying games. In an Instagram post, Avdija, who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers, stated that his commitment to representing Israel is unwavering and has been proven through his actions over the years.

Avdija explained that he has consistently joined the national team even when dealing with injuries or when it wasn't ideal for his professional career. He cited instances where he played while in pain, not at 100% fitness, and before signing lucrative contracts, emphasizing that he never sought excuses to avoid playing.

He clarified that his current absence was due to a complex back injury sustained over the summer, which made it impossible for him to play. Additionally, Avdija mentioned that his team, the Portland Trail Blazers, was unwilling to risk his health, leaving him with no choice but to sit out. He stressed that this decision was not made lightly and was a result of the circumstances, not a lack of desire to play for his country.

The controversy arose after the Israeli national team lost to Latvia, 85-70, marking their sixth loss in the qualifiers and eliminating them from World Cup contention.
