Deni Avdija Addresses National Team Absence Amidst Criticism

Israeli basketball player Deni Avdija broke his silence on Monday regarding the controversy surrounding his absence from the national team's recent game window. In a statement posted on Instagram, Avdija addressed the criticism he received, emphasizing his commitment to representing Israel.

Avdija stated that he has always prioritized playing for the national team, even when injured or when it conflicted with personal career decisions, such as playing before a contract year. He explained that his absence from the latest window was due to a complex back injury that prevented him from playing.

He clarified that the decision not to participate was not solely his own, as his team, the Portland Trail Blazers, would not permit him to risk his health. Avdija acknowledged the disappointment and criticism but stressed that his dedication to the team and country should not be questioned.

"I understand disappointment, I understand criticism. When you represent a country and there are expectations of you, it's part of the deal and I accept it," Avdija wrote. "But one thing I am not willing to have questioned is my commitment to the national team and my country. I don't need to tell you how much I care. I think I've proven it time and again with actions."

Avdija concluded by expressing his desire to be healthy, return to the court, and wear the Israeli jersey again, affirming that his heart remains with the team even when he cannot play.
