Avdija Defends National Team Commitment Amid Criticism

Israeli basketball star Deni Avdija responded Monday to criticism regarding his absence from the current World Cup qualifying games, asserting his unwavering commitment to the Israeli national team and country. In an Instagram post, Avdija, who plays for the Portland Trail Blazers, stated that those who know him understand the significance of the national team jersey. He highlighted his history of playing for Israel even when facing physical pain or when it wasn't ideal for his personal career, citing instances where he joined the team while injured or facing a contract year, never seeking excuses.

Avdija explained that his desire to play this time was also strong, but a complex back injury and his team's stance prevented his participation. He described the injury as one that those who haven't experienced it cannot fully comprehend, and noted that the decision not to play was not solely his. Portland was unwilling to risk his health, leaving him no option but to sit out.

The Israeli national team lost its sixth qualifying game to Latvia, 85-70, eliminating any chance of reaching the World Cup. Avdija acknowledged the disappointment and criticism but implored that his loyalty should not be questioned, emphasizing that his actions have repeatedly proven his dedication.

He concluded by expressing his strong desire to recover, return to the court, and wear the Israeli jersey again, affirming that even when unable to play, his heart remains with the team.
