Avraham Fried Releases Emotional Live Performance of 'The Soul Descends'

Singer Avraham Fried has released a special live performance of the Chabad nigun (melody) 'HaNeshamah Yoredet' (The Soul Descends) as part of the 'Tzama' project for the Hebrew month of Elul. The release coincides with the 18th of Elul, the joint birthday of the founders of Hasidism, Rabbi Israel Baal Shem Tov and Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi.

The song delves into the profound existential question of why the soul descends into the physical world. Fried's rendition was recorded during a live 'Tzama' concert, capturing a shared spiritual journey between the performer and the audience. The musical arrangement and production are by Naor Carmi, who created a rich soundscape to complement the nigun's spiritual depth.

Fried personally shared the song's message, explaining that the soul's descent is a divine mission to experience life in a physical body and perform mitzvot (commandments), ultimately leading to a higher spiritual ascent than remaining in the spiritual realm. He emphasized the idea that "descent is for the sake of ascent," making the earthly struggles worthwhile.

The performance is featured on a new EP from 'Tzama' for the 18th of Elul, which also includes Daniel Weiss's rendition of 'Kol Ba'Yער' and Raviv Kenner's performance of 'Arashet Sefateinu.' This collection aims to provide a complete musical journey suitable for the period of introspection and repentance leading up to the High Holy Days.
