Maccabi Netanya Striker Matheus Dabo Could Have Been Signed for Pennies

Matheus Dabo, the star striker for Maccabi Netanya, could have been acquired by other clubs for a fraction of his current value, according to his agent, Ziv Sternberg. Dabo recently scored a hat-trick against Beitar Jerusalem, adding to his 11 goals in the 2026/27 season. Sternberg revealed in an interview with "5 Baavir - Ha'chadar Ha'chadash" that the transfer process was difficult, but he had promised it would happen.

Sternberg explained that when he initially scouted Dabo, the player was not actively playing but showed immense speed and power. He offered Dabo to numerous clubs across different tiers, stating they could have signed him for almost nothing at the time. However, Ohad Kadousi, then assistant to coach Yossi Abukasis at Netanya, saw Dabo's potential and pushed for his signing.

Dabo became a regular starter in Brazil, and by the time Netanya re-engaged, the transfer became more complex with changing terms and sums. Sternberg praised Dabo's speed, versatility across forward positions, and heading ability, noting he was Netanya's top scorer and assist provider in his first season despite joining late.

This past summer saw significant interest in Dabo from both Israeli and international clubs, with substantial offers, some comparable to top Israeli league salaries, being rejected. Netanya has made it clear that Dabo is not for sale, regardless of the price. He is currently earning an exceptional salary for Netanya and is contracted through the end of the season with an option for an additional year.

Since the change in ownership and the arrival of Ross Katin and other players, Netanya's motivation and salary structure have increased, aiming to compete with larger clubs. Sternberg anticipates Dabo will have another strong season, with potential European interest remaining, though Netanya is firm on not selling him easily. Dabo, 27, is described as a family man who is religiously and culturally connected to Israel, having experienced the country during wartime and explored its sites.
