Top Rabbis Urge Public to Buy Only Inspected Eggs Amid Health Concerns

Representatives from the Council for the Poultry Industry visited prominent rabbis, including Rabbi Meir Tzvi Bergman and Rabbi Shlomo Machfoud, to raise awareness about the dangers of consuming uninspected eggs. The visits, which took place last week, are part of a campaign to prevent public health risks associated with unregulated egg sources.

These religious leaders have endorsed a special public call urging citizens to avoid cheap, uninspected eggs and to purchase only those bearing official inspection marks. This initiative stems from concerns over public health and recent reports of illnesses, particularly among children in Haredi communities, with some cases requiring hospitalization due to severe infections, viruses, and salmonella.

During meetings, council representatives explained the risks of uninspected eggs to the rabbis, who emphasized the importance of public awareness. Rabbi Bergman stated, "It is very important to alert the public so that there is no harm, God forbid." Rabbi Machfoud stressed the severity of the issue, saying, "The danger is more serious than a prohibition. We must alert the public, especially parents, to the grave danger."

Rabbi Masoud Ben Shimon, the Chief Rabbi of Bnei Brak, also highlighted the need for warnings, citing severe cases that necessitate public alert, invoking the principle of "You shall guard yourselves exceedingly for your lives."

The rabbis' call, signed by several prominent halachic authorities, warns that medical professionals have reported an increase in severe illnesses linked to uninspected eggs from questionable sources lacking sanitary oversight. They specifically caution against discounted or impromptu egg sales and implore parents to ensure eggs purchased have an authorized inspection stamp, emphasizing the religious obligation to protect one's health and the health of their families.
