Widow of Fallen Commander Joins Officer Training to Honor His Memory

Lieutenant Colonel Dor Ben-Shimon, commander of the 52nd Armored Battalion, was killed in Lebanon by an explosive drone, along with three crew members. His wife, Lieutenant Colonel Ariel Ben-Shimon, also a distinguished officer, is now enrolling in the battalion commanders' course, following in his footsteps.

The couple, who met in the military eight years ago, shared a deep professional and personal bond. Ariel, who humorously recalled often being ahead of Dor in rank, expressed pain not over lost rank but over lost time together after Dor was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel before her. She served as deputy commander of a reconnaissance battalion, earning admiration from her soldiers.

Dor had planned to leave the military for a quieter life in informal education, but Ariel encouraged him to stay and pursue command. He was serving as battalion commander for two months in Lebanon, leading operations including crossing the Litani River, when his tank was hit. He died at the height of his service, a fact Ariel finds solace in.

Ariel is now raising their two young daughters, Ayala, 3, and Gaia, 1.5, alone. She has chosen a scenic overlook at their kibbutz, Beit Hashita, for a memorial grove in Dor's name. Despite her grief, Ariel is determined to continue their shared path, stating, "I know he would have been proud of me for this choice. He would have told me: Go for it, go achieve yourself."
