Hamas Uses Balloon Launches to Gather Intelligence on Israeli Military Systems

Hamas has adopted a strategic approach of launching balloons from Gaza to collect intelligence on the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). According to closed-door discussions reported by the Shin Bet, this is a deliberate tactic aimed at diverting the IDF's attention while gathering data on Israeli detection systems and flight paths. The intelligence collected is intended to support future drone and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) attacks against Israel.

Despite reports that Hamas is supposed to be disarming, the organization continues to use these simple tools to force the IDF to respond to each balloon launch, thereby revealing the locations of forces and detection equipment. The Shin Bet emphasized to political leaders that this is a purposeful act with a clear objective, not merely a trial or nuisance tactic.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz stated during a military briefing that the deadline set for stopping balloon launches has passed. He warned that any further launches from Gaza into southern Israeli communities will be met with a strong response. Katz added that under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's directives, the IDF is prepared to take all necessary measures, including evacuations, to prevent Hamas or any other group from resuming previous patterns of attacks and threats against southern Israel.

This development highlights ongoing security challenges along the Gaza border, with Hamas adapting its methods to gather intelligence and prepare for future aerial attacks despite international and Israeli pressure to disarm.
