Rockstar Releases Extended GTA 6 Preview Ahead of November Launch Amid Leak Fallout
More than a year after the last trailer, Rockstar Games provided an extended preview of Grand Theft Auto VI on Netflix on Thursday evening, ahead of the game's official release on November 19. The preview, also set to be uploaded to YouTube early Friday morning Israel time, revealed new gameplay mechanics, story details, and the immersive world of Vice City, the game's Miami-inspired setting. Rockstar emphasized a stronger focus on realism compared to previous titles, including NPCs reacting to players carrying automatic weapons and dynamic character changes based on player choices.
The game features two main protagonists, Jason Doval and Lucia Caminas, with players able to switch between them more fluidly than in GTA 5. Lucia, a former MMA fighter and ex-convict, marks the series' first female lead with depth and story, addressing past criticism of misogyny. Character appearance will be affected by factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, and scars, a mechanic inspired by Red Dead Redemption 2. The game world was meticulously crafted, with a dedicated team in Los Angeles working on NPCs, over 50 street artists designing murals, and researchers studying Miami culture and visuals.
Additional gameplay elements include social media networks accessible via in-game phones, a fuel gauge requiring players to refuel vehicles, and non-lethal combat options. Players can engage in activities like car and motorcycle racing, kayaking, and diving. Jason and Lucia can also spend time together outside scripted missions, enhancing narrative depth.
The preview came shortly after a major leak by hackers known as CyberLeek, who released about 15 gameplay clips from a development build, causing disappointment at Rockstar. The hackers demanded Rockstar announce a physical release of the game and promoted a cryptocurrency linked to them, suspected to be a pump-and-dump scam. Rockstar confirmed the leaked footage was genuine and expressed regret over the leak, stating it "broke the team's heart" and delayed their planned reveal. Despite the leak, Rockstar remains committed to delivering a game that exceeds expectations after 13 years of development.
GTA 6 will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with anticipation high among fans and investors alike. The game is expected to break sales records, although Israeli players will face higher prices than anywhere else globally.
