Israel Perceived as 'Thug Nation' Due to Settler Violence, Police Chief Warns

Police Commissioner Kobi Shabtai has expressed grave concern over the damage to Israel's international image caused by settler violence in the West Bank, stating that "Americans are fed up" and the world perceives Israel as a nation of "thugs and criminals." Shabtai highlighted that a small group of settlers is actively attacking Palestinians, causing significant reputational harm.

Shabtai's remarks came as settlers reportedly set fire to a mosque and spray-painted hate graffiti on its walls in the village of Bazariya, northwest of Nablus. The graffiti included threats directed at the US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Harkavy, and a Channel 11 journalist. The suspects fled before security forces arrived. The IDF condemned the incident, noting it distracts from security operations.

Ambassador Harkavy responded to the graffiti targeting him, calling it "sad" that someone would "boast about being a terrorist" but emphasized that the small group does not represent the Jewish people or the rest of Israel.

The Police Commissioner also addressed Defense Minister Israel Katz's initiative to transfer civilian enforcement responsibility in the West Bank from the IDF to the police. Shabtai indicated that the IDF is the sovereign authority on the ground and has instructed senior police officials not to hold meetings with the military on this matter for now.

Recent UN data, cited by The New York Times, reveals a surge in settler attacks in the West Bank since October 7th. Thousands of Palestinians have been injured, and over 3,200 have been displaced due to settler violence this year, a rate double that of last year. The number of Palestinians injured daily by settlers has risen significantly since 2020. The report also noted that over 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since October 7th, primarily by Israeli forces, a figure comparable to the total killed between 2005 and 2022. Additionally, 67 Israelis have been killed by Palestinians in the West Bank since 2023.
