Ultra-Orthodox Protest Massive Arrests of Yeshiva Students

Hundreds of ultra-Orthodox men gathered Sunday evening outside Prison 10 in protest of the recent arrests and imprisonment of several yeshiva students. The demonstration was called for by prominent rabbis, including Rabbi Moshe Maya and Rabbi Shlomo Machfoud, who signed a dramatic statement decrying the arrests as a "desecration of Torah and persecution of its scholars." The statement urged widespread participation in the protest, emphasizing the obligation to demonstrate against the jailing of Torah scholars for "the sin of Torah study."

The protest comes amid a reported surge in arrests of yeshiva students. Among those highlighted were Israel Guchfi of Bnei Brak, arrested in Haifa over a transit card issue and handed over to military police; Moshe Steiner, a student at Yeshivat Hakyvutz in Moshav Beit Meir; Moti Mishkovsky, grandson of Rabbi Natan Zochovsky, who was sentenced to 20 days in Prison 10; and Avraham Angel, a student at Yeshivat "Nezer Israel," who was arrested on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle and subsequently imprisoned.

Sources within the "Tzeva Schachor" organization expressed deep anger, warning that a lack of trust in the police and enforcement systems could lead to anarchy during future attempts to arrest yeshiva students. The former Sephardic Chief Rabbi, Yitzhak Yosef, also addressed the issue during his weekly lesson, recounting a story of a yeshiva student who endured severe spiritual distress during his imprisonment, citing constant television exposure to immodest content against his pleas.

The rally signifies the deep shock within the Torah world regarding the wave of arrests and the unified call from prominent rabbis to protest what they perceive as a persecution of Torah learners.
