Slovenia and Czech Republic Veto EU Statement Condemning Israeli Construction in E1 Area

Slovenia and the Czech Republic vetoed a joint European Union statement by 27 member states condemning Israel's construction plans in the E1 area. This veto forced EU Foreign Affairs Chief Kaia Klaas to issue a personal statement instead of a collective one. Slovenia's veto followed a change in government, with Prime Minister Janez Janša's administration taking office in June 2026, months after the previous government had supported critical statements against Israel. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar held phone talks that led to the EU statement including references to Israeli efforts to prosecute settlers involved in violence.

Diplomatic ties between Israel and Slovenia are expected to strengthen, with the first Israeli embassy in Slovenia set to open in mid-September, coinciding with Sa'ar's planned visit. However, Israeli officials caution that Slovenia is not necessarily becoming distinctly pro-Israel, as Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar maintains critical positions toward Israel. The Slovenian Foreign Ministry reiterated its consistent support for international law and a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
