Israel’s women’s goalball team wins silver and clinches Paralympic berth
Israel’s women’s goalball team finished runner-up at the World Championship in China after losing the final 12-4 to host nation China on Monday. China had reached the title match by beating Turkey, the Paris 2024 gold medalist, in the semifinal.
Israel’s place in the final, secured the previous night, also guaranteed the team a spot at the Paralympic Games, giving Israel its first ticket to Los Angeles 2028. Team captain Lihiya Ben David said the squad was “full of happiness and pride” after finishing second in the world and earning the first Israeli berth for Los Angeles.
She added that she believes “other athletes will follow us” and that Israel will have “a huge delegation,” wishing success to all athletes on the road to the Games. The championship in China was the first time both Israel’s women’s and men’s national goalball teams took part in the same World Championship.
Israel’s men made a respectable debut and finished 15th overall. They placed third in their group, then lost to Finland and Thailand before ending the tournament with a 9-4 win over Egypt in a match played in a sporting and friendly atmosphere.
