Former Nigerian Striker Yakubu Estimates His Value at $200 Million in Today's Transfer Market

Yakubu Aiyegbeni, remembered as one of the greatest foreign players in Israeli football history, reflected on his career and the evolution of transfer fees in a recent interview with AY Suga. The Nigerian striker joined Maccabi Haifa at a young age, playing four seasons in Israel where he helped the club win two league titles and reach the Champions League group stage. He later starred in the English Premier League with clubs including Portsmouth, Middlesbrough, Everton, Leicester City, and Blackburn Rovers.

Yakubu discussed the dramatic increase in player valuations, noting that players today who score around 10 goals can command transfer fees of 50 million pounds. He highlighted his own Premier League record of roughly 15 goals per season over several years, pointing out that his transfer from Middlesbrough to Everton was about 11.5 million pounds at the time, which he estimates would be equivalent to 150 million pounds (approximately 204 million USD) today. He also recalled his move from Portsmouth to Middlesbrough for around 7.5 million pounds, which was considered a huge sum then.

He emphasized the pressure that came with such high transfer fees, stating that when clubs pay large sums, there is significant expectation to perform. Yakubu concluded that by today's market standards, he believes he would be valued at around 150 million pounds. His reflections provide insight into the inflation of football transfer fees and the challenges players face under such financial scrutiny.
