Israeli Politicians Demand Mansour Abbas's Disqualification Over Controversial Statements

Israeli political figures sharply criticized Mansour Abbas, leader of the Ra'am party, following revelations of his remarks in Arabic about Israel's recognition as a Jewish state. The comments, exposed by journalist Amit Segal, indicated that Abbas acknowledged Israel as a Jewish state only to avoid disqualification of his party from the upcoming Knesset elections. This disclosure sparked fierce backlash from prominent politicians including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, former Minister Gilad Erdan, MK Tali Gottlieb, and the Otzma Yehudit party.

Smotrich labeled Abbas a "dangerous enemy, a wolf in sheep's clothing," accusing him of concealing his true intentions and employing tactics associated with the Muslim Brotherhood to undermine Israel. He condemned the left and former military Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot for seeking coalition partnerships with Abbas. Erdan accused Abbas of deceiving both the public and the election committee, asserting that Abbas desires an Islamic caliphate rather than a Jewish state. Gottlieb called Abbas an enemy of the Jewish state who only recognized Israel's Jewish character to avoid disqualification, warning against allowing his party to run in the elections.

Otzma Yehudit announced plans to file a formal request to disqualify Abbas from the Knesset race, citing his admission of not genuinely recognizing Israel as a Jewish state. The party also criticized potential coalition talks involving Abbas, warning of his influence over national security and law enforcement policies. Other political figures, including former IDF officer Ofer Winter and Beit Tzioni party leader Yoaz Hendel, echoed calls to bar Abbas from parliament.

The controversy centers on longstanding tensions over Ra'am's stance on Israel's Jewish identity and Abbas's political strategy to maintain his party's electoral viability. Ra'am, linked to the southern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel, has sought greater integration into national politics, notably joining the 2021 coalition government led by Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid. Abbas's role remains a divisive issue in Israeli politics, especially ahead of the 2026 elections.
