Trump Says Oil Tankers Are Leaving the Strait of Hormuz as Iran Disputes Timing
US President Donald Trump said on Monday that ships, many of them carrying oil, have begun leaving the Strait of Hormuz and are moving through a southern route he described as “totally safe, secure and safe.” He also said there are “other travel areas” as well.
The comments came as tensions continued over the US-Iran agreement announced in a memorandum of understanding. Shortly after Trump’s post, the Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that reopening the strait would not happen immediately, despite the latest deal talks.
According to Tasnim, Trump had insisted that the strait be reopened as soon as the agreement was announced, but Tehran rejected that demand. The sides eventually agreed that the reopening process would begin only after the official signing expected on Friday.
Tasnim also said last-minute changes were made to the deal text before the memorandum was published. One addition was a clause committing to “ensuring Lebanon’s sovereignty and respect for its territorial integrity,” language the report said Trump had previously refused to include in earlier drafts.
