IDF Central Command Warns Nationalist Crime Could Ignite West Bank Violence

During a recent security briefing with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Central Command Chief Avi Blot warned that nationalist crime in the West Bank could act as a "match that ignites everything," potentially triggering widespread escalation despite a general decline in Palestinian terror attacks over the past two years. Blot emphasized that the IDF's focus has increasingly shifted toward addressing nationalist crime incidents rather than Palestinian terrorism.

When Netanyahu inquired about the IDF's preparedness and plans for a potential flare-up in the West Bank, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir admitted that the military was not ready to present a concrete response plan at the meeting. Defense Minister Israel Katz later noted that the discussion highlighted a continued decrease in Palestinian terror attacks in the West Bank for the second consecutive year, attributing this to IDF and Shin Bet operations and the government's aggressive policies, including actions in refugee camps in northern Samaria.

The briefing included senior officials such as the National Security Advisor, heads of military intelligence and operations, and the West Bank Division commander. Military sources have recently warned the political echelon about the risk of a broad escalation in the West Bank, fueled by ongoing nationalist crime, friction on the ground, and illegal outposts pushing the region toward a boiling point. There is also a noted shift in Palestinian public behavior, with increased responses to incidents that previously went unchallenged.

A senior IDF official highlighted enforcement difficulties due to some local leadership and government factions supporting chaos, leaving field commanders feeling isolated. Currently, the IDF deploys 26 battalions in the West Bank but warns that forces are stretched thin, limiting rapid response capabilities. Security officials caution that the existing tools to combat Jewish terrorism are limited and ineffective, warning that the combination of these trends could lead to disaster. The IDF has not issued an official response to these concerns.
