Liberman Urges Yair Golan to Avoid Controversy and Focus on Consensus Ahead of Elections

Avigdor Liberman, chairman of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, called Yair Golan, leader of the Democratic camp, last Thursday with an unusual message ahead of the upcoming elections. Liberman urged Golan to refrain from making controversial statements and to concentrate on issues with broad consensus. According to Channel 13, Liberman told Golan, "Stick to topics that have consensus and avoid provocative remarks." He warned that statements by Golan and other Democratic candidates could harm not only their party but the entire political bloc, requesting restraint during the election period.

This conversation is notable given the tense political relationship between Liberman and Golan. Recently, Liberman has avoided public association with Golan and refused to be photographed with him, despite the possibility that their parties might join the same political bloc after the elections. About two and a half weeks ago, Liberman sharply criticized Golan, stating he would not support a government in which the Democrats hold sensitive portfolios such as defense, internal security, or justice.

At the "Medabrim Tekuma" conference in Ramat Hasharon, Liberman was asked about the Democrats potentially receiving these key ministries. He responded firmly, "It is simply unacceptable. I said very clearly: no and no." When asked why he frequently attacks Golan and his statements, Liberman said, "I would be happy to praise him, if only he would be silent. That is his greatest contribution to our victory."

Liberman emphasized that there are enough unifying issues for the bloc, including legislation to limit the prime minister's term to two terms, conscription laws, and constitutional establishment. He warned against raising divisive political topics during the campaign, calling discussions about the Palestinian state or evacuation of settlements "complete madness" and "work solely benefiting Netanyahu."
