Maccabi Netanya Aims for Top-Tier Finish Under Owner Russ Kestin's Vision

Maccabi Netanya kicks off its Israeli Premier League season on Monday at 20:00 against Bnei Sakhnin, with a clear goal to improve on last season's standing. The club, owned by Russ Kestin since last year, envisions competing for the championship within three to four years, but this season's minimum target is to qualify for the upper playoff bracket. Despite the legendary 1982/83 championship being 44 years ago, Kestin, based in Miami, demands a professional leap forward this season.

The team has struggled with inconsistency in recent years, often losing points to weaker opponents and starting seasons poorly. Veteran coach Roni Levy, a Netanya native and former player, returned last season to lead the team and aims to break this pattern. Levy, experienced with top Israeli clubs like Maccabi Haifa and Beitar Jerusalem, believes the team can join the league's top five, a group currently dominated by five clubs almost guaranteed playoff spots.

Netanya retained key midfielders Maor Levi and Basem Zaaroura, along with Oz Bilu and Mateus Dabo, who were sought by bigger teams but stayed. New signing Dolev Haziza, arriving after a difficult stint at Maccabi Haifa, is expected to be a leader on and off the field. Additional signings include Alon Azougi, Gregory Morozov, and Dor Hugy, providing depth.

Defensive improvement is crucial, as the team conceded 63 goals last season. Portuguese goalkeeper Samuel 'Samo' Silva, acquired this summer, is expected to strengthen the defense. The club is still seeking a foreign center-back and a left winger to complete the squad. If successful, Levy will have a deep roster capable of tactical flexibility.

Fan support remains vital, with the "Yellow-Black Army" known for passionate backing, though recent years saw protests against CEO Gil Lev, who recently resigned. Kestin's visit to Israel and Lev's departure have energized supporters. So far, about 3,500 season tickets have been sold, with hopes that new signings will boost attendance and turn Netanya's stadium into a fortress.

As the season begins, Netanya combines financial backing, experienced coaching, talented players, and a dedicated fan base, aiming to return to the Israeli football elite. While challenges remain, the club is optimistic about realizing Kestin's dream of making Netanya a top contender sooner than expected.
