Israeli Drone Operator Joins Earthquake Relief Mission in Native Venezuela

Retired Sergeant Shimon Ben Zaken, 35, from Beit Shemesh, participated as a drone operator in an international rescue mission to Venezuela following a severe earthquake. Born in Venezuela, Ben Zaken's family emigrated to Miami when he was four, and he had never returned until this mission. Serving as a rescuer and drone operator in Israel's National Rescue and Relief Unit, he described the mission as a "roots trip," combining personal discovery with professional duty.

Ben Zaken recounted the emotional complexity of returning to his birthplace, witnessing both its natural beauty and the devastating earthquake damage. The rescue team employed advanced technology, including two types of drones: one for 3D mapping of the affected areas to guide rescue efforts, and another for internal building scans. This technology allowed access to dangerous or locked locations quickly and safely, enhancing operational efficiency.

He also shared recent military experiences, including participation in Operation "Roar of the Lion" during the last conflict, where his unit searched for missing persons in Haifa. Additionally, he was near his home in Beit Shemesh during a tragic missile strike in the war, highlighting his ongoing commitment to rescue operations both abroad and at home.
