Father of 6-Year-Old Stabbed to Death by Mother Seeks Support to Rebuild Life

Doron Nathaniel Hass lost his only son, 6-year-old Liam, and the family dog in July 2024 in Herzliya, after his wife, Sigal Yana Itskovitz, fatally stabbed their son during a psychotic episode. Hass was not home at the time. Following the attack, Itskovitz, bleeding and wielding an axe, was filmed attempting to assault passersby and a mall security guard. She was acquitted of murder due to her psychotic state and sentenced to 25 years of psychiatric hospitalization.

Since the tragedy, Hass has suffered from severe post-traumatic stress disorder and is recognized by the National Insurance Institute as fully incapacitated. He has lived in central Tel Aviv with family support but must soon leave his current home. To aid his recovery, he has a new service dog, Luna, whom he hopes to train as a certified service animal, a process costing about 50,000 shekels. Luna provides him with essential emotional security, allowing him to leave the house and face public spaces, which he otherwise avoids due to trauma.

Hass explained that while he qualifies for a service dog, his condition is not linked to a security incident, so he does not receive government funding for training. He appealed to the National Insurance Institute and health funds but was denied financial support. He is now racing against time to complete Luna’s training before she retires at age eight.

Facing imminent eviction, Hass is urgently seeking a new apartment where he can live with Luna. He has launched a crowdfunding campaign to help cover housing and memorialize his son. Hass shared that building Lego creations, one of Liam’s favorite activities, has been a therapeutic outlet. He has dedicated a whole room to Lego in his home as a tribute to his son, whom he described as "the most amazing child."
