Bambi Returns as a Vengeful Horror Creature in New Film
A new horror take on Bambi, titled "Bambi: The Reckoning," is set to open in Israeli cinemas on June 18. Instead of the familiar coming-of-age story, the film turns the young deer into a grotesque, revenge-driven predator shaped by trauma and loss.
The plot follows Xana and her son Benji, who are stranded deep in an isolated forest after a car crash. There they discover the woods are ruled by a terrifying and dangerous stag whose grief and pain fuel an unstoppable killing spree. According to the film’s synopsis, the creature sees every human who crosses its path as a stand-in for an unresolved loss. As more characters enter the story, including local hunters and an obsessive grandmother, the forest becomes a trap that is hard to escape.
The film was directed and edited by Dan Allen, from a screenplay by Rhys Warrington based on Felix Salten’s book. The cast includes Roxanne McKee, known for "Game of Thrones," Russell Geoffrey Banks and Samira Mighty. "Bambi: The Reckoning" has already won the cinematography prize at the Independent Horror Movie Awards.
The movie joins a growing wave of horror adaptations that recast beloved children’s stories in dark new forms, using the original tale’s themes of loss and trauma as the basis for its violence.
