Israeli Border Police Commando Returns to Combat After Severe Injury and Rehabilitation

An Israeli Border Police commando, identified as A.Sh., suffered severe injuries including the loss of his right eye due to a grenade explosion during an operational activity in Tulkarm on October 5, 2023, just two days before the outbreak of the Iron Swords war. The 40-year-old, a decorated soldier with two citations for valor and operational achievements, underwent complex surgeries and faced prolonged infections and serious injuries to his hand and leg. Following initial treatment, he embarked on an intensive year-and-a-half rehabilitation program at Bnei Zion Medical Center in Haifa, after a recovery period at Tel Hashomer.

During rehabilitation, A.Sh. received personalized therapy including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, cognitive and emotional support, and strengthening of his injured hand. His progress was remarkable; he regained walking ability, returned to driving, and resumed instructional duties. He now can perform 20 consecutive pull-ups, demonstrating significant physical recovery. Additionally, Dr. Yoav Verdizer, head of oculoplastic surgery at Bnei Zion, fitted him with a unique prosthetic eye featuring a Star of David.

This week, upon completing his rehabilitation, A.Sh. visited Bnei Zion Medical Center to thank the rehabilitation team and met with the hospital director, Prof. Ohad Hochman. Dr. Amichai Lavkovitz, head of neurological rehabilitation, praised the soldier's exceptional determination and the tailored treatment plan that enabled his gradual return to independence and function. Prof. Hochman emphasized the story as a testament to human resilience and advanced rehabilitative medicine, expressing pride in A.Sh.'s goal to return to combat duty.
