UK, Canada, Australia Condemn Israel Over Aid Workers' Deaths in Gaza, Demand Accountability
International pressure on Israel is mounting following its decision not to open a criminal investigation into the deaths of seven foreign aid workers in Gaza. The UK, Canada, and Australia jointly condemned Israel's choice as "shameful" and pledged to continue pressing for accountability. The victims included three British citizens, one Polish, one Australian, one Canadian, and one dual American-Canadian citizen. The fatal incident occurred on April 1, 2024, when a convoy from the World Central Kitchen delivering food to Gaza residents was struck by gunfire. The foreign ministries of the three countries demanded a swift and thorough investigation and expressed particular dismay that Israel announced its decision on World Humanitarian Day, a time honoring aid workers' bravery. Poland also joined the criticism, expressing "deep disappointment" and summoned Israeli Ambassador Yaakov Finkelstein for clarification, urging cooperation with Poland's ongoing investigation. The Israeli military stated that its forces mistakenly identified an armed security guard in the convoy as a Hamas operative, which led to the shooting.
