Nahariya Sees Population Surge and Wins National Education Award Amid Recovery

Nahariya is experiencing significant recovery following difficult years, with its population rising from approximately 61,000 on October 7 to nearly 80,000 residents, according to Mayor Ronen Marley. Speaking in an interview on 103FM on August 21, 2026, Marley attributed this growth to the city's attractiveness and demand, especially from northern Israel residents seeking homes with protected spaces (Mamad). He noted that the city has built 11,000 housing units under a master plan agreement, contributing to rising property prices.

Mayor Marley also highlighted Nahariya's recent achievement in winning the national education award, a key goal he set upon taking office. The city had previously won the regional education prize twice and reached the national finals before securing the top honor this year. Marley praised the city's educational leadership, including school administrators, teachers, and budget managers, emphasizing that the municipality dedicates 90% of its efforts to both formal and informal education.

Regarding the wartime period, Marley explained that the municipality implemented effective measures to minimize disruptions to schooling. Drawing lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic, the city managed to keep students learning continuously and successfully addressed any educational gaps that arose during the conflict.
