Violent Clash Erupts Between Palestinians and Settlers in Gush Etzion Amid Rising Tensions
A violent confrontation occurred on the morning of August 21, 2026, in eastern Gush Etzion between a group of ultra-Orthodox Israeli settlers and over one hundred Palestinians. The settlers claimed they were attacked with stones, and that security forces called to the scene were also assaulted. According to the settlers, a rock was thrown at the head of a Border Police commander who responded with gunfire in self-defense. However, two Palestinians involved alleged the settlers had arrived with the intent to set fire to a building under construction in a nearby village. The incident resulted in a young Palestinian being shot and several settlers injured by stones. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and police are investigating the circumstances.
The clash reflects escalating tensions in the West Bank. The previous evening, unusual footage from Kusra in Samaria showed clothing being thrown from a military-occupied house inhabited by IDF soldiers. The human rights group Yesh Din reported that the clothes belonged to three women and two girls from families under severe restrictions near their homes for nearly two weeks due to heightened tensions and the establishment of a nearby outpost. The IDF said the military presence and temporary posts were to protect residents. Yesh Din said the families requested permission to deliver clothes to the women and children unable to reach their homes, but shortly after, soldiers reportedly threw the clothes out the window. The footage was recorded by Louis Abu Ridi. Yesh Din has appealed to the West Bank Attorney General regarding the incident.
