Explore Alona and Binyamina: A Refreshing Summer Day Trip with Nature, History, and Coffee
The Alona and Binyamina area in central Israel offers an accessible and beautiful destination for a refreshing summer day trip combining nature, history, and leisure. The region features green hills, agricultural orchards, and historical sites, including natural springs and ancient water tunnels that provide cool relief on hot days.
A key attraction is the Alona Park, located in a natural woodland area. It houses an impressive underground water tunnel from the Roman and Byzantine periods, originally built to supply water to the port city of Caesarea. Visitors can walk through about 280 meters of the restored tunnel in darkness with flashlights, wading through water that reaches knee to waist height. The park also includes an adventure ropes course with bridges, climbing walls, and zip lines. Visitors must bring water shoes, flashlights, and a change of clothes, and entry requires advance booking and payment through the "Mei Kedem" website.
Another highlight is Ein Aviel, a beautiful natural spring along the Tanninim Stream, one of the few remaining perennial streams in the coastal area. Historically used for irrigation and feeding a Roman aqueduct, it now offers a deep open pool about 1.5 meters deep and a hidden waterfall inside a shaded reed cave. This open natural site has no lifeguards or facilities, so visitors must take their trash with them.
Ein Amikam is a calm, shallow spring near the moshav Amikam, shaded by eucalyptus and willow trees. It is especially suitable for families with young children and those seeking a green picnic spot by flowing water. Like Ein Aviel, it is an open natural area without artificial shade or public amenities, requiring visitors to maintain cleanliness.
To conclude the day, visitors can enjoy coffee and light meals at the "Cafe Daz" cart located in the courtyard of the historic Binyamina Sea House complex. The building dates back to the 1920s and was originally the home of the Chudakov family, founders of the Binyamina settlement established by Baron Rothschild. The cafe offers a pastoral seating area under trees and a kosher dairy menu including sandwiches, pastries, fresh salads, acai bowls, and coffee. It operates Sunday through Thursday from 7:00 to 19:00 and Fridays until 15:00.
