Haredi Party Threatens Legal Action Against Shas Spokesman Over Defamation Claims

The Haredi political party "HaTzibur HaHaredi" has sent a legal warning letter to Shas spokesman Asher Medina following his remarks on Kol Barama radio. Medina accused new Haredi parties of being funded by left-wing groups with the intent to "burn Haredi votes," claiming these parties falsely represent the Haredi public. The party demands an immediate public apology and clarification across Medina's social media platforms for at least 30 days, along with an initial compensation of 50,000 shekels.

In the warning letter, HaTzibur HaHaredi described Medina's statements as "false publications with no basis in reality." The party's chairman, Moti Leitner, emphasized that "whoever lies will pay," attributing Medina's accusations to panic over losing votes due to a failed term and disconnect from the public. Leitner urged Shas to clarify that it will not ally with Benny Gantz and to focus on internal reform rather than spreading defamatory claims. Asher Medina has not responded to the allegations.

This dispute highlights rising tensions within the Haredi political arena ahead of the 2026 elections, with accusations of vote-splitting and political maneuvering among ultra-Orthodox factions. HaTzibur HaHaredi is pushing for representation within Shas's list, signaling ongoing competition for influence in the Haredi sector of Israeli politics.
