Israeli Firefighters Rescue Large Eagle Owl Trapped in Pigeon Net on Roof
In the northern Israeli town of Hoshaya, firefighters rescued a large eagle owl that had become entangled in a pigeon deterrent net on a rooftop. The net, installed to keep pigeons away, inadvertently trapped the owl, exposing it to intense heat and sunlight. Firefighters arrived promptly, carefully freeing the bird without causing further injury. After the rescue, the owl was given fluids and transferred to the Israel Nature and Parks Authority for ongoing treatment and rehabilitation.
The eagle owl is one of Israel's largest and most impressive nocturnal predators, capable of hunting a wide range of animals including mammals, birds, and reptiles. Research in Israel has documented rare cases of this owl preying on adult hedgehogs. Despite its strength, the species faces significant threats from human environments, with studies showing that electrocution, vehicle collisions, and injuries from fences and wires are leading causes of death among eagle owls in agricultural and urban areas.
This dramatic rescue highlights the dangers wildlife face in human-modified landscapes and underscores the critical role of emergency responders who not only handle fires and accidents but also wildlife emergencies. The hope is that after recovery, the owl will be released back into the wild.
