Kanye West Set to Perform in Russia This October Amid Controversy and Cancellations

Kanye West is scheduled to perform two concerts in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on October 10 and 11, marking the first major Western artist appearances in the country since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The shows will take place at the Gazprom Arena, the city's largest stadium. This announcement follows a series of canceled performances across Europe, including France, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, and Poland, largely due to backlash over West's antisemitic remarks in recent years, for which he has apologized.

Despite the controversies, ticket sales for the Russian concerts have been strong, with premium tickets priced over $1,850 selling out within hours, and even the cheapest tickets around $105 quickly disappearing. The announcement sparked a surge in hotel bookings and inquiries in Saint Petersburg, according to Yunis Taymorkhanli, owner of the Helvetia Hotel.

Within Russia, the concerts have also drawn criticism. Conservative Russian legislator Vitaly Milonov suggested West should perform traditional Russian songs to better integrate and change his behavior. While Western artists largely stopped performing in Russia after the 2022 invasion, some, including DaBaby, Tyga, and Jason Derulo, have recently returned for shows.

The UK government barred West from entering the country for a major London festival earlier this year, citing public interest concerns. Following that, his European shows were canceled amid ongoing criticism. Nonetheless, West has managed to hold large concerts in the Netherlands, Turkey, and Albania. Later this month, he plans to return to the United States for three shows in Chicago and New Orleans.

Reports also indicated that there were talks about West performing in Israel, though no confirmed dates have been announced.
