Kanye West Scheduled for Two Concerts in Russia This October Amid Controversy
Kanye West is set to perform two stadium concerts in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on October 10 and 11, marking the first major Western artist appearances in the country since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The shows will take place at the Gazprom Arena, the largest stadium in Saint Petersburg. This announcement follows a series of canceled performances across Europe, including France, Italy, Switzerland, the UK, and Poland, largely due to backlash over West's antisemitic remarks in recent years, for which he has apologized.
Despite ongoing negotiations for a potential concert in Israel, the Russian shows have already sparked criticism domestically. Russian conservative lawmaker Vitaly Milonov suggested West should perform traditional Russian songs to integrate and change his behavior. However, ticket sales indicate strong fan interest, with premium tickets priced over $1,850 selling out within hours and even the cheapest tickets, around $105, sold out by evening.
The owner of the Helvetia Hotel in Saint Petersburg reported a surge in bookings and inquiries immediately after the concert announcement. While Western artists largely ceased performing in Russia following the 2022 invasion, some, including DaBaby, Tyga, and Jason Derulo, have returned recently. The UK government barred West from entering the country for a major London festival earlier this year, citing public interest concerns, and his European shows faced cancellations amid controversy. Nonetheless, West has successfully held large concerts in the Netherlands, Turkey, and Albania, and is scheduled to return to the US later this month for shows in Chicago and New Orleans.
