Hapoel Haifa Midfielder Ofek Biton Opens Up About Overcoming Severe Injury
Ofek Biton, a midfielder for Hapoel Haifa, shared an in-depth interview with C14 about the difficult period following his severe knee injury in February. Biton, who was having an excellent season with three goals and five assists, suffered a torn cruciate ligament that abruptly halted his momentum. He described the moment he received his MRI results as devastating, recalling, "I opened the phone and saw black," and initially struggled to accept the long road ahead.
Biton detailed the emotional and physical challenges during rehabilitation, including a period when he felt broken and lost his appetite. He credited his wife for unwavering support, saying, "Without my wife, the rehabilitation would have looked completely different," highlighting her help with daily tasks and emotional strength. Despite the hardships, Biton never considered quitting football, emphasizing his determination to return stronger.
He also spoke about the mental challenges of watching teammates play while sidelined and the fear of returning to the pitch, particularly the initial moments of physical contact. However, he remains optimistic about regaining confidence and form. Biton acknowledged that the injury interrupted his promising trajectory at Hapoel Haifa, where he was on track to reach 12 goal involvements this season, but he refuses to dwell on what could have been.
Regarding his future, Biton noted that his contract with Hapoel Haifa ended in the summer but believes the injury opens new opportunities rather than limiting him. He mentioned receiving offers and interest from other clubs but prioritizes completing his rehabilitation first. Looking ahead, Biton envisions himself back on the field within a year, healthy and contributing significantly, aiming to win trophies and achieve double-digit goals and assists.
He concluded by reflecting on the resilience gained through his recovery, stating that overcoming multiple setbacks during rehab has strengthened his resolve and diminished his fears about future challenges in his career.
