Government Extends Civil Defense Emergency Order Nationwide by Two Weeks
Against the backdrop of an agreement with Iran and continued fire from Lebanon, the government on Monday approved extending Israel’s special home front emergency declaration across the entire country. The order, which had been set to expire on June 16, 2026, was extended by another two weeks, until June 30, 2026, and will be sent immediately to the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for legal approval.
According to government documents, security officials still assess that there is a high probability of an attack on civilians. The official rationale cites worsening security assessments and deep regional uncertainty, including ongoing rocket fire from Lebanon, concern over renewed direct fire from Iran, and broader uncertainty regarding developments in the confrontation with Tehran.
The documents also point to the immediate escalation that drove the decision. On June 7, 2026, Iran launched a large ballistic missile attack at Israel’s civilian population, prompting an Israeli counterstrike that same day. Iranian missile fire continued on June 8 as well.
The extension gives the IDF, especially the Home Front Command, broad powers under the Civil Defense Law. These include ordering people to remain in protected spaces, imposing precautions, restricting studies and educational activity, and issuing binding instructions to rescue and aid organizations. Before the current extension expires at the end of the month, officials will review whether another extension is needed based on the latest operational assessment. If conditions improve significantly, the authorized bodies may cancel the declaration entirely or narrow it to only the areas that still require it.
