Israel Bars MK Ahmad Tibi From Meeting Gaza Hospital Director Detained for Terror Links
Israel's Prison Service prevented Member of Knesset Ahmad Tibi from meeting Dr. Hossam Abu Safiya, the director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in Gaza, who is currently imprisoned in Israel. The decision follows a policy by National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir that prohibits Knesset members from meeting with individuals classified as terrorists. Prison Service Commissioner Kobi Yakobi cited a security directive allowing the prevention of meetings that pose a security risk, aid terrorist organizations, or disrupt investigations. Intelligence and security agencies assessed that the meeting would present a significant security threat to the state.
Dr. Abu Safiya was arrested by Israeli Defense Forces in Gaza in December 2024, with security officials alleging that the hospital he managed was used for Hamas terrorist activities. The Israeli Supreme Court upheld his detention, based on classified intelligence confirming his active involvement in terrorism on behalf of Hamas. A spokesperson for Minister Ben-Gvir told Channel 7 that Ahmad Tibi is a supporter of terrorism and emphasized the minister's policy to prevent terrorists and their supporters from gaining any advantage while imprisoned.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between Israeli authorities and Palestinian figures, as well as the strict security measures applied to individuals suspected of terrorism. The policy restricting meetings between lawmakers and detainees classified as terrorists remains firmly in place, reflecting the government's security priorities.
