Breslov Hasidim Plan to Bypass Exit Bans for Annual Uman Pilgrimage
Ahead of the annual Rosh Hashanah pilgrimage to Uman, Breslov Hasidic leaders and activists from the "Ezra Veyetzira" organization held an emergency meeting with activist Shimon Shisha to discuss ways for thousands of draft evaders to leave Israel despite exit bans. According to Galei Tzahal, the proposed plan involves these individuals presenting themselves at military recruitment offices for their initial draft summons and beginning the enlistment process, feigning intent to serve. This tactic aims to cancel their exit bans and allow them to fly to Uman without completing actual military service later.
Rabbi Moshe Kramer, a senior Breslov rabbi, acknowledged the significant obstacles but expressed confidence that the Hasidim would manage to reach Uman as usual. However, insiders familiar with the details highlighted serious challenges in implementing the plan. They noted that a similar idea surfaced last year but was largely rejected by most Breslov rabbis due to the potential legal complications for young men.
Moreover, it was emphasized that simply appearing at the recruitment office does not guarantee cancellation of exit bans. Those who attempt this may be required to serve sentences for draft evasion or face detention, risking imprisonment or compulsory military training instead of traveling to Uman. The plan might only succeed for individuals who have not previously been classified as draft evaders, but even then, returning to the military system could lead to significant difficulties if they formally enlist.
