Israeli Businessman and Philanthropist Dr. Shmuel Haralaf Passes Away at 82
Dr. Shmuel Haralaf, a prominent Israeli businessman, investor, and philanthropist, died at the age of 82. Haralaf was a key figure in Israel’s automotive and high-tech industries, having been appointed chairman of CalMobil in 1982, a company founded by his father. Under his leadership, CalMobil became Israel’s leading car importer, expanding from Mercedes to major brands like Mitsubishi and Hyundai, capturing about 20% of the local car market.
In addition to his automotive ventures, Haralaf was a major investor in Israeli startups, most notably in Mobileye. The sale of Mobileye to Intel earned him and his company over one billion dollars. He also invested in other technology and medical companies such as OrCam and I.V.I. Haralaf held a PhD in philosophy from Harvard University and previously lectured in political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Haralaf was widely recognized for his philanthropic efforts. Following the October 2023 events, he and his wife donated 120 vehicles to residents of the Gaza Envelope kibbutzim Nir Oz, Nahal Oz, Be’eri, and Kfar Aza. A year later, they contributed $180 million to establish a new heart and brain center at Beilinson Hospital.
His passing marks the loss of a significant figure in both Israel’s business and philanthropic communities.
