Israeli Military Police Abandon Attempt to Arrest Yeshiva Student Amid Protests in Bat Yam
In the late hours of Tuesday night in Bat Yam, Israeli military police attempted to arrest a yeshiva student at a residence on HaMa'apilim Street. The arrest effort was thwarted after activists from the Jerusalem Faction quickly mobilized following a 'black alert' message, leading to a growing protest at the scene. Realizing the increasing number of demonstrators, the military police withdrew without making the arrest. The protesters celebrated with prolonged dancing at the site where the officers had stood moments before.
This incident marks the first proactive arrest attempt by the military police in a significant period during which enforcement against draft-age yeshiva students had notably decreased. The arrest attempt came just one day after the Israeli Attorney General, Gali Baharav-Miara, issued a letter urging renewed and intensified enforcement actions against draft evasion in the ultra-Orthodox community. In her letter to military and police officials, Baharav-Miara criticized the current level of enforcement as insufficient and demanded a structured plan to ensure compliance with conscription laws among yeshiva students.
The event highlights ongoing tensions between Israeli authorities and segments of the ultra-Orthodox community regarding military conscription, with the Jerusalem Faction actively opposing such enforcement measures. The authorities are expected to respond to the Attorney General's directive with increased operational activity in the near future.
