Amit Segal Slams Emerging U.S.-Iran Deal as Trump Faces Right-Wing Backlash
A dramatic U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding is shaking Israeli politics and security, and drawing unusually sharp criticism from the Israeli right toward President Donald Trump. The uproar follows a special interview Trump gave to The New York Times, where he laid out the deal taking shape with Tehran.
Trump said Iran would be allowed to enrich uranium only to a low level. He also described the timetable under discussion, saying, “We are talking to them about a 15-20 year ban.” At the same time, he tried to pressure the sides by warning, “If no agreement is reached within 60 days, we will return to war.”
Not everyone believes the president’s assurances. Amit Segal, the senior political commentator for Channel 12 News, argued that the interim arrangement amounts to a security giveaway that could directly endanger Israel. In a forceful response, he described the White House move as effectively waving a white flag before the Shiite axis of evil.
Segal called it “Trump’s total surrender,” saying the plan “actually allows uranium enrichment in Iran, and makes it easier for Iran to hide more advanced enrichment.”
