Bus Driver Stabbed in Ramat Gan Amid Rising Violence Against Public Transport Workers
A bus driver employed by Derech Eged, a subsidiary of Egged, was stabbed during his shift in Ramat Gan on Tuesday evening. The driver was attacked while operating the bus and was subsequently taken to the hospital. The bus company reported that the police have launched an investigation and confirmed the driver’s condition is stable. According to the Public Transport Drivers Organization under the National Labor Federation, incidents of physical violence against public transport drivers have increased by over 12% in the past month alone.
Israel Ganon, chairman of the drivers’ organization, expressed grave concern over the escalating violence, stating, "We repeatedly call out the growing violence against drivers. It is time to expand the security unit for public transportation nationwide. Unfortunately, the day when a driver will be murdered is closer than ever." Earlier this month in Jerusalem, another bus driver from Superbus was violently attacked at the start of his route. While stopped at a red light, several youths struck the bus and then severely beat the driver when he opened the window, causing him to lose consciousness, lose four teeth, and sustain facial injuries. After regaining consciousness, the driver heard continued threats and insults from the attackers. He managed to contact the police and receive medical treatment.
The recent stabbing in Ramat Gan and the earlier assault in Jerusalem highlight a troubling trend of increasing attacks on public transport workers, prompting calls for enhanced security measures to protect drivers and passengers alike.
