Jewish Life Revives in Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Region with Chabad Support
In the Jewish Autonomous Region of Birobidzhan, located in Russia's Far East near the Chinese border, Jewish life is experiencing a vibrant revival. Established about 90 years ago as a Soviet-era Jewish autonomy, the region has seen authentic Jewish culture flourish only in recent decades, largely due to the dedicated efforts of Chabad emissaries. These efforts have transformed the area into a lively Jewish community, maintaining religious observance, developing Torah institutions, and engaging deeply in local social activities.
Recently, the community marked a significant milestone with the installation of a new Torah scroll in the synagogue and the production of strictly kosher honey for the upcoming Jewish holidays. The community also plays a key role in social welfare, acting as a beacon of kindness and support during both routine times and crises.
A notable achievement includes the establishment of a unique memorial complex as part of the federal "Land of Memory" project. This initiative, agreed upon in a meeting with the region's governor, Ms. Kostiuk, involves preserving soil from battlefields to honor fallen soldiers. The Jewish community stands firmly alongside bereaved families, providing assistance and support. Governor Kostiuk praised the community's involvement, emphasizing the importance of these memorial spaces for families.
This blend of Torah study, religious observance, and social engagement illustrates the thriving state of Jewish life in Birobidzhan. The community looks forward to continued growth and positive developments in the coming year.
