Jewish Community in Russia’s Birobidzhan Revives Tradition with Kosher Honey and Memorial Project

Located about 7,000 kilometers east of Moscow near the Chinese border, the Jewish Autonomous Oblast of Birobidzhan was established nearly 90 years ago as a Jewish homeland. However, authentic Jewish life has only flourished there in recent decades, largely due to the efforts of Chabad emissaries. Under the leadership of Rabbi Ephraim Kolpak, the community has transformed from a symbolic entity into a vibrant Jewish center, marked notably by the recent dedication of its first Torah scroll, celebrated with a procession featuring Yiddish signage.

This spiritual revival is supported by Rabbi Berel Lazar, the Chief Rabbi of Russia, who encourages the strengthening of Jewish identity in the region. The community’s connection to tradition extends beyond religious services into family life, especially during Jewish holidays. Ahead of Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Marzel, head of kosher supervision under the Russian Chief Rabbinate, visited the nearby town of Obluchye to oversee the production of high-quality kosher honey unique to the local climate. This honey is intended for use during Rosh Hashanah and Passover, ensuring strict adherence to kosher standards.

In addition to religious and cultural renewal, the community plays a significant social role. A recent agreement with the regional governor, Ms. Kostiuk, established a memorial site within the federal "Land of Memory" project. This site will preserve soil from battlefields to honor fallen Jewish soldiers, providing comfort and moral support to their families. Governor Kostiuk emphasized the importance of such memorial spaces and expressed gratitude for the Jewish community’s involvement.

Together, these developments demonstrate the flourishing of Jewish life in Birobidzhan, combining Torah study, religious observance, and community engagement. The community looks forward to continued growth and positive developments in the coming year.
