Meta Profits From Online Impersonation Scams Amid Bank Leumi Lawsuit

Meta is facing a lawsuit from Bank Leumi over fraudulent advertisements on Facebook that impersonate the bank and other prominent Israeli business figures to lure victims into financial scams. Omri Barak, host of the podcast "TrashTalk," explained that impersonators pay Meta to promote these deceptive ads, which often use deepfake technology to create fake WhatsApp groups promising benefits, ultimately causing users to lose significant sums of money.

Barak emphasized that the problem extends beyond Bank Leumi, involving various high-profile individuals in Israel. Despite Meta's claims of removing many fake accounts and pages, Barak noted that the company profits from these promoted ads and that there is no direct regulation of social media platforms like Meta in Israel. This regulatory gap contrasts with the oversight of financial markets by the Israeli Capital Market Authority.

The lawsuit highlights Meta's central role in enabling these scams by monetizing fraudulent advertisements. Barak also pointed out the challenges in effectively policing social media content, citing limited capacity to remove harmful posts on a large scale, as seen during times of conflict.
