IDF Reservist Shlomo Kalner Wins Likud Primary, Urges Vote Against Ultra-Orthodox Candidates
Shlomo Kalner, an IDF reservist with over 400 days of service, won the Likud primary for the Dan district, running with the backing of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. In an interview, Kalner explained his decision to enter politics stemmed from his extensive military reserve service and a desire to influence Israeli politics. He emphasized prioritizing the rights and recognition of reservists and their families, noting that Israeli society still underestimates the heavy price they pay during extended service periods.
Kalner called for expanding military service to additional populations to reduce the burden on reservists and pledged to promote this agenda within the ruling Likud party. He rejected claims that new parties better represent reservists, asserting that authentic representation should come from within the governing party. Addressing concerns about ultra-Orthodox voters organizing in the primaries, Kalner urged Likud members to vote against ultra-Orthodox candidates, warning that low turnout could empower pressure groups pushing external candidates.
He encouraged voters to support candidates who genuinely represent the Zionist public and reservists. Kalner identified reservists and young people as the key constituencies he aims to represent. Following his primary victory, he is expected to advocate for these priorities on the Likud party list in the upcoming elections.
